“Półkownik” (from Polish "półka" -a bookshelf)– this was the name given to a film that was not approved for distribution by the censors. Filmmakers working on films that dealt with current events and who tried to show the impact of politics on the fate of man had to reckon with the fact that the only viewers of their films would be the censors. Many therefore emigrated – Jerzy Skolimowski moved to the West when the censors blocked Hands Up, and Ryszard Bugajski when they blocked distribution of Interrogation.
