Kunstmann IV Planisphere

This facsimile by Otto Progel reproduces the original by the Portuguese cosmographer Jorge Reinel, at this time (c. 1519) in the service of the King of Spain. It enables us to appreciate the imagined size of the Earth that Magellan and his men were using for their navigation. The estimated size of the Pacific is of particular interest; it suggests a surface area 13% smaller than the current reality.
