Kybunga meteorite

Symonston, Australia

The Kybunga meteorite fell in 1941 during the period of WWII into the grain fields and paddocks south of the town of Blyth, about 100km north of Adelaide. These stony chondrites were believed to be related to a record of a meteor, called the 'Kybunga Daylight Meteor' which was seen shooting across the sky.

Most unusually, it was photographed in flight, on film in a box brownie camera, by a school teacher who was about to photograph his family, when everyone suddenly pointed to the sky and said “look at that!”. Fortunately he had the presence of mind to turn around and press the shutter. The photograph and their account was printed and published in the magazine of the Royal Geographical Society at the time.

The specimen here is a thin polished slice and from one of the original three pieces ever discovered.
