Best known as an architect, Lajos Kozma also made a mark in the field of applied arts. Among the impressive array of furniture designs in the collection, there are interestingly few that were meant for children. This is one of the two drawings that represent cots, executed in pencil on tracing paper, the artist’s favoured technique.
The railed cot, whose contours are simple, is placed in a corner of the room. It has a late art deco, proto-modern style. For this piece, Kozma had abandoned his own ‘baroque’ style; it is simplified to a degree where ornamentation is almost impossible. A special, practical feature is the soft padding on the inside of the bed, which serves to prevent the child from bumping against the railing.
