  • Description: Convictions of religion certainly inspired La Maldad Canonizada (Evil Canonized). In his work Vázquez depicts a woman partially clothed in a white gown and standing in a ruined portal surrounded by denuded vines. The overexposure of the photograph creates a glow around her form, suggesting some degree of sanctity, but both the title and the vegetation imply otherwise. His contradictory title adds further ambiguity to the image. Vázquez seems to question how organized religion has situated the feminine body as the personification of evil, and his work harkens back to images of the dangerous femme fatale, painted by the Symbolists of the late nineteenth century. -Text by Mark Andrew White
