The Virgin of Cristóbal Colón

Unknown1540

Museo Lázaro Galdiano

Museo Lázaro Galdiano
Madrid, Spain

The work belongs to the collection dated before 1913 which was a photographic reference of the Colon collection (the worshiping Virgin Mary painted by a primitive Spanish artist).

It may be the oldest portrait of Cristóbal Colón, the portrait commissioned by his sons to his tomb in Santo Domingo and would not have been a original, but a copy of a lost portrait. This fact would explain some anachronisms of the work, such as the insignia of the Admiral of armor with the motto PLUS OULTRAE between the Pillars of Hercules himself from the time of Carlos V, and the alleged presence of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, at the bottom of the panel, which was completed in 1540.
