Labyrinthodonts are a group of extinct amphibians that spread especially since the Carboniferous. It included also "giant" species as Eryops, to which belongs this set of footprints. They have likely originated from archaic fishes from marshy environments that, living in areas prone to drying out, were able to breathe atmospheric oxygen and move on land. In fact, despite having well-developed limbs, they still displayed some characters typical of fishes (Giancarlo Ligabue Foundation Collection).
