Robert Alexander Darrah Miller, known to his friends as R.A.D., was born in Philadelphia in 1905. Shortly after completing his studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Miller settled in New Hope in 1928. Upon his arrival in New Hope, Miller met artist Thomas Hart Benton; four years later the two were working jointly on a mural project. Miller painted landscapes, portraits, and still lifes; working initially in the impressionist style, his mature style evolved to a more modernist mode of expression.
