Cité de la dentelle et de la mode

The "punto in aria", literally "point in the air", appeared in the first half of the 16th century and was the first lace point (in the strict sense of the term: that is created separately from a pre-existing textile support) made with a needle. Originally from Italy, this technique spread across Europe thanks to model books. In France, Catherine and especially Marie de Medicis were big consumers, followed by the court and the wealthy bourgeoisie.
