During excavations in 1983 a lacquer peel was made from the moat profile of the oldest fortification on the Cathedral Square, the late Saxon Hammaburg I from the 8th century. This "transfer picture" of the excavation findings shows a cross section of the V-shaped ditch with its many backfill layers.
