Lacquered box inlaid with Mother-of-Pearl

Horim Museum
Seoul, South Korea

This is a pine tree box. Metal pieces decorated with flowers are signs showing that decorativeness and rigidity were both sought after. The lid is decorated with various flowers and plants on the sides and a pair of birds amongst bamboos and blossoms on the top. The technique of fracturing the mother of pearl using a hammer is appropriately applied for diffuse reflection. Such pieces rarely survived.
