Lacquered Boxes

The artist Yu Namkwon majored in Oriental painting in university, and studied furniture design in graduate school. As a result, he is very talented at dealing with all kinds of paintings, furniture, and small objects. These round boxes were completed by applying lacquer to wooden boxes through a silkscreen technique. That is how even very fine lines were delicately expressed. Gradation with lacquer was also made possible. Yu learned traditional lacquering from Park Kangyong (an artisan designated as an intangible cultural property by a local government in Korea), and continues to present a variety of works, including those made of many layers of hanji coated with lacquer stemming from different densities.
