Delicate lines emphasize the woman’s striking garment; her eyes cannot be seen beneath her delicate veil. The elaborate drapery of her clothes and her rich jewelry point to her wealth but also her arrogance. Municipal dress regulations of the time prohibited such courtly costume. Because the veil is cut off by the right edge, it cannot be determined whether the woman is being pursued by the devil, as in a similar drawing by Dürer.
