The origin of this portrait is not known, but historians, based on the frequent recurrence of this young woman's face in works by Andrea, have hypothesized that it could depict Maria, daughter from his wife, Lucrezia's first marriage. Her gaze outside of the picture frame while she indicates the love sonnets by Petrarch establishes a rare relationship of complicity with the viewer. The painting is listed in the first inventory of the Tribune in 1589, attributed to Pontormo. The correct attribution to del Sarto was made in 1634.
