A drawn postcard from Giacometti to Amiet shows Hodler painting this picture on the shore of Lake Silvaplana near Surlej, looking towards the Margna and Maloja; underneath it is written 'SILVAPLANA' on the left and '19 SEPTEMBER 1907' on the right: one may suppose that this is the date of origin. (Cuno Amiet/Giovanni Giacometti: Briefwechsel, Zurich 2000, no. 293)
Hodler stayed in St. Moritz in August/September and painted an almost identical repetition of this picture.
