This fragment is from the lower portion of a landing gear strut. It is from one of the aircraft that struck the World Trade Center – either from American Airlines (AA Flight 11) or United Airlines (United Flight 175). It was retrieved during the World Trade Center debris recovery operation, which was a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) project. It was transferred to USACE from the FBI after it was determined that it was not needed for investigation or evidence, and after the airlines gave permission.
