While primarily employing watercolour, wash and tempera, Abanandiranath used pastels as well with great effect. In the late ‘20s of the twentieth century, Abanindranath painted a great many works in pastel. Many of them were portraits but there were some landscapes as well. This contemplative landscape of the then Bengal countryside with its open vista of a vast sky, glimmering water and little else is a beautiful minimalist image.
