The large scale of later Hudson River School paintings encouraged a sense of entering into the scene. Here, in the quiet lake, the ring of trees and greenery, the armchair visitor could find many elements that denote a typical Hudson River School scene. The broken, falling trees and mountain add to a feeling of wilderness belied by the appearance of cows, not deer. Prentice had, in fact, been raised on a farm in the Adirondacks. Later he moved to Brooklyn and specialized in still life painting.
