Description: Born to Yves Morisot, brother of Impressionist artist Berthe Morisot, Paule Gobillard grew up close with her aunt and even closer with her cousin Julie Manet, Morisot’s daughter with Eugène Manet. Gobillard, along with her younger sister Jeannie, often traveled with the Manet family on their various trips to the French countryside, including the town of Mézy, where the Manet’s very frequently rented a villa. Gobillard returned to Mézy as an adult around 1900, five years after her beloved aunt passed away. On this particular trip, she found inspiration in the area’s scenic landscape, from the grove of trees in the foreground and middle ground to the blue-topped hills in the background. Almost hidden behind the tree on the right is a small haystack, reminiscent of the haystacks her family’s friend Claude Monet had produced at nearby Giverny in the previous decade.
