English-born artist Frances Flora Bond Palmer, a.k.a. Fanny Palmer, created more than 200 lithographs for Currier & Ives. She specialized in flower pictures and scenes of the Hudson River, and here she combined the two. The dense bouquet and fruit reference Dutch Old Master paintings. Only the most elaborate paintings of this genre included background landscapes, and Palmer bathed her scene in a cheerful light quite unlike those dark precedents.
