Nature fascinated the artists of the Young Poland period in a particular way. The discovered for art the local landscape, empty and dead fallow lands, but also the richness of nature expressed in blossoming orchards, bountiful gardens, and lush fields thick with wheat. For Jan Stanisławski (1860-1907), nature was the preeminent theme and a source of inspiration. The artist painted many flower portraits. These are found in the foreground of his compositions, forming a photographic frame. The main protagonist of Stanisławski’s paintings is the meadow, on one hand showing the diversity of flowers and other plants, and on the other being a reflection of the artist’s nostalgic spirit.
