This scene incorporates two major themes in East Asian landscape painting: the autumn season represented by the full moon and flying geese, and “visiting friends,” represented by a tiny figure climbing the narrow pass to a mountain villa. Among intellectuals, visiting a friend and sharing each other’s thoughts and ideals came to be considered the ultimate joy. A chilly autumn night with the full moon would be ideal for such an occasion. Rendered in soft, abbreviated brushwork, all the elements have been reduced to their simplest forms. This simplification, combined with the expanse of water and mist, gives the work its serene mood.
Soami, the artist associated with the style of this painting, served the Ashikaga shoguns as the keeper of their large collection of Chinese works of art. In this capacity, he had the opportunity to study imported paintings at first hand, taking them as the basis for his own ink landscapes.
