Landscape

Suzuki Shōnen1908

Rijksmuseum

Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam, Netherlands

In early 20th-century Japan, Suzuki Shonen modernized landscape painting in a Chinese style. He replaced the traditional subdivision in fore-, middle and background with a more continuous perspective. This yielded a modern atmosphere making an almost photographic impression. At the same time he exhibited his skill with the brush. Using only monochrome ink he rendered the wealth of textures and tints of this
monumental landscape in the summer rain.
