This work is one of about ten oil sketches produced by Thomas Anshutz in the 1890s that resemble the work of Theodore Rousseau in the artist’s handling of light and application of paint. Dominated by simple blocks of tone and color, these works focus on the large features of the landscape’s sky, earth and trees. The dark palette of the work resembles that of sketches Anshutz produced in the early or middle 1890s.
