Landscape with a Farm Building and the House with the Tower

Rembrandtca. 1650

Rijksmuseum
Amsterdam, Netherlands

The country house in the distance at the right belonged to Johannes Uytenbogaert (‘The Goldweigher’) when Rembrandt etched it. Characteristic was the high, octagonal tower with a dome and spire. Rembrandt initially sketched this, but then decided to eliminate most of the tower in the copperplate. This led to the print later being incorrectly called The stumpy tower.
