Dulwich Picture Gallery
London, United Kingdom

"De Loutherbourg was the son of a miniature painter and trained in Paris under the history painter Carle van Loo before embarking on a very successful career as a landscape painter. He moved to London in 1771 and established a reputation as an innovatory set designer, working for the Drury Lane Theatre under David Garrick, the actor-manager. He was known for his ability to create atmospheric light effects on stage.

Dulwich Picture Gallery founder Francis Bourgeois was taught by De Loutherbourg, which explains the presence of his master's work in his collection.
