Landscape with enraged ox

Adam Pynacker1665-1670

Art Gallery of New South Wales

Art Gallery of New South Wales
Sydney, Australia

Pynacker’s landscape evokes an idealized image of Mediterranean light and terrain rather than the Dutch countryside. In the 17th and 18th centuries such works were more highly prized than naturalistic Dutch landscapes. This picture belongs to the most successful period of the artist’s career in the late 1660s when his compositions became larger in scale and more theatrical.
