José Vital Branco Malhoa was born in Caldas da Rainha, in the Central Region of Portugal, on the 28th April of 1855 and died in Figueiró dos Vinhos on 26th Octobre of 1933. With only 12 years old joined the school of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Lisbon. In all the years he won the first prize, due to his artistic quality. He participated in numerous exhibitions in Portugal and aboard, like in Madrid, Paris or Rio de Janeiro. He was a pioneer of naturalism in Portugal, having joined the Leão Group. He also stood out as one of the Portuguesepainters that got closer to the Impressionist Art.
