In 1635, landscape painter Jan Both from Utrecht, travelled to Italy with his brother Andries, a genre painter. When Andries drowned in Venice in 1641, Jan returned to Utrecht. This same year signalled the beginning of his success. His paintings are characterized by stately, thickly-wooded landscapes irradiated by bright or golden sunlight.
