Description: The career of this artist, who was born in Milan but to a Genovese family, can be separated into three main phases: his training in Milan, with frequent trips to Lombardy, Emilia and Tuscany; his apprenticeship under Pieter Mulier, called the Tempesta, in Milan, Bergamo and Brescia; his return to Genoa, with the elaboration of a new, more gentle painting style, after studying the works of Gaspar Dughet, Salvatore Rosa and Castiglione.
In Landscape with Shepherds, Tavella abandons the strong contrasts of light and dark in favor of a more classicist style that reveals connections with contemporary Roman paintings by Jan Frans van Bloemer and Andrea Locatelli. These traits allow for the dating of the painting to the last period of Tavella’s career.
