  • Description: Mentioned in the inventory of the eighteenth-century Pozzobonelli Collection and attributed to Pieter Mulier, called Tempesta, this canvas, along with its counterpart Landscape with Shepherd and Sheep that Drink in the River, is exemplary of the work of the artist, who is Dutch by birth but Italian by adoption. After training in Northern genre painting and a trip to Antwerp in 1656, Mulier settled permanently in Italy, moving between Rome, Genoa, and Lombardy in the final years of his career. From a stylistic point of view, elements relating to Northern European culture, Flemish in particular, are evident in this painting, especially in the strong color contrasts and in the structure of the composition, with large planes of color executed with the use of dense brushstrokes. The attention to the meteorological variations in the sky is typical of the works completed during Mulier’s stay in Milan in the last decade of the eighteenth century, and this painting can therefore be dated to that period.
