Francisco Domingo is one of the artists the Fricks met during a visit to France in 1895. The back of this painting features a unique memento of that visit—a trompe l’oeil image of a card, inscribed: A Madame/H. C. Frick/souvenir de Paris/F. Domingo/28 Aout 1895. This faux card is “attached” with a real wax seal, and beneath it are two small portraits. Domingo was known for characters like this—not quite portraits and not quite caricatures. His work is similar to that of his teacher Meissonier, and he was often called “The Spanish Meissonier.”
