Doughty belonged to the generation of American landscape painters who preceded the Hudson River school. Early compositions such as <em>Landscape with Winding Road</em> display his mastery of atmospheric effects and his familiarity with the contemporary popular aesthetic of the picturesque. Doughty became best known for his romantic interpretations of sublime American scenery—poetic evocations rather than literal portraits of specific locales.
