  • Further Information: George Knapton is best known for his portraits of members of the Society of Dilettanti and later as Keeper of the King’s Pictures. The identity of this sitter is known through an inscription by Horace Walpole on a mezzotint by James McArdell after this painting, now in the British Museum (Museum Number 1902,1011.3247). She is recorded as the wife of ‘Capt. Griegg of the Marines’. She is dressed in the fashion of the 1740s, in a morning gown made of Spitalfields brocaded silk with carnations, bluebells and cornflowers. In the basket she holds on her lap, there is a plumed pink, a traditional symbol of betrothal. Her elaborate necklace of paste pearls in the design of a bowknot, and yellow hat with purple lining and ribbon is also in keeping with the fashion of the 1740s.
  • Acquisition Method: Broad, Prof. C. D. (Gift, 1946)
