Lantern Depicting the Deposition of Christ

This lantern, carried during the Good Friday Procession in Mendrisio, depicts the Deposition of Christ, with the Virgin Mary and two figures lowering Jesus from the cross. Originally, the processional lanterns were made primarily of paper. Towards the end of the eighteenth century, Giovan Battista Bagutti introduced the technique of the Trasparenti, which would become the distinctive artistic feature of Mendrisio's Holy Week Processions.
