Laocoon (copy of the Vatican original)

Leone Leonic. 1560

Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana

Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana
Milano, Italy

This copy of the famous sculptural group of the Laocoon in the Vatican Museums comes from the so-called Casa degli Omenoni, where Leone Leoni kept his collection of plaster casts of the most important works of art in Rome. It came to the Ambrosiana with the Bartolomeo Calchi Donation and was immediately put on display next to the copy of Michelangelo’s Pietà. The right arm, which is extended rather than bent, shows that this cast was made after the 1532-1533 restoration of the original.
