Considered the largest architectural work in Brazil in the eighteenth century, the Arcos da Lapa is today one of the greatests postcards of the city. With 270 meters long and 17,6m high, its construction in stone and lime was all done with manpower of indigenous and African slaves. Initially a aqueduct, in 1896 the arches began to serve as a pass for trams.
