Tokyo, Japan

Started in the Hizen area of Saga province during the Genna period (1615-23), the underglaze blue design used in Arita ware reflects influences from old sometsuke ware, from the end of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Compared to the crisp Chinese style, the design of this bowl depicts a more unrestrained landscape, forcefully representing the Japanese aspects.
