Nabeshima ware was produced at kilns owned by the Nabeshima domain (present-day Saga prefecture), for court nobles and high-ranking families of the warrior class. This work presents a brushwood fence painted in underglaze blue and overglaze red, green and yellow enamels over a bluish-white porcelain ground. It is a representative work of Nabeshima ware, the most exquisite among Japan’s enameled porcelain, which was made from strictly selected materials and by distinguished techniques.
