Leach, a British potter, built friendships with individuals including Hamada Shôji and Kawai Kanjirô and offered guidance in pottery-making techniques through the Mingei (folk art) movement. He visited Shimane Prefecture multiple times. He paid a visit to kilns for Fujina ware and offered pottery-making guidance, having considerable influence. This composition was produced with the slipware (decorative lead-glazed earthenware) technique, a traditional British decorative technique. Leach used a syringe with clay in mud form and illustrated a griffon, an imaginary animal, using tsutsugaki (drawing with a cone).
