Ramon Carreté’s contribution to contemporary ceramics lies in his capacity to give it the status of sculpture. He started producing large, hand-modelled ceramic recipients with superimposed clay rings, worked with his fingers or any tool or object to hand. The result are large works of organic forms which play with cavities as nature does; sometimes they have marine forms - clam shells - or fruit forms. What we see here, a lantern, transports us to characters from Oriental literature. Ramon Carreté i Móra (1938-1990) He was trained at the School of Art of the Diputació of Tarragona, where he was a lecturer in ceramics from 1966 until his death, and at the Massana School in Barcelona where he was a student of Josep Llorens Artigas and Francesc Albors. With scholarships from the Diputació and the French Institute of Barcelona, he was able to continue his studies in Italy, in 1963, and in Paris the following year. His love of travel made him knowledgeable about many countries and gave him a detailed knowledge of their ceramic skills through working in studios in Pakistan and Japan. His initial works were produced on a lathe and here one can appreciate the influence of his lecturer Llorenç Artigas; his creative process evolved towards the deformation of pure lines to reaching sculptural forms. Carreté always combined his ceramic work with painting and drawing, presented in similar subject matters. Text by M. Dolors Giral
