The day he was hanged for high treason, Louis Riel (1844-1885), Métis chief and founder of Manitoba, expressed his last wishes in this document. Riel, widely considered a martyr, was condemned to death following his trial for leading the North-West Rebellion, in which the Métis of Saskatchewan unsuccessfully attempted to assert their rights and form their own government.
