In this vignette, Latrobe demonstrates how to draw water in motion "effected by a slight of using the pencil." He instructs Spotswood to leave the edges of the waves white when laying on the first tint. The next tint is applied with a full brush upon the upper edge of the wave, and gradually washed pale towards the next below it.
