Stockings are made of stitches (loops): Every row is attached to the previous row. If one stitch tears, the stitch below also loses its support, and the damage runs through the stocking. Smaller shops thus were equipped with machines to pick up the stitches that had come undone with a special latch-type needle. This service cost only a few pennies.
