It is an evergreen plant-its size ranges from a small shrub to a small tree up to 10 m - it grows in woods and shrublands of the Mediterranean region. In Greek and Roman mythology it was considered a sacred plant and it represented wisdom and glory: a crown of laurel used to be given to the winner of the Pythian or Delphic games and it was also the highest honor for a poet to achieve.It was the sacred plant of the Greek God Apollo, it was named Daphne in Greek, the nymph, who was loved by Apollo and transformed into a laurel tree. The leafs are used in several different ways: they can be used to add flavour to meet and fish, as a traditional domestic remedy against moth, to make refreshing beverages, that also have antiseptic, digestive properties or they can be used to make a invigorating and digestive liqueur. It also has beneficial effects against coughs. It used to be used also to preserve books and parchment.
