Derived from the German Gnome rotary engine, the French Le Rhone rotary aircraft engine was utilized by multiple British aircraft during World War I. Throughout the war, some 25,000 of these engines were built. The rotary engine is unique in that the entire engine spun with the propeller as early aircraft engines suffered from severe overheating issues.
