Leather bag and horn

National Museums of Kenya

National Museums of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya

Three different sized leather bag, one a small cow horn with a tiny nick out of its rim. The bags and horn made and used by old men to hold their beer horns, spoons e.t.c. and many used to carry magic things. Only married men with two children who must be one of each sex could use such bags to carry magic things in. The horn, which looks like an ordinary snuff horn but is different by having the nick out of it was used in 1950. When Mr. John Nottingham was a D.O. in the location they say he was the most disliked D.O. ever and in order to try to get rid of him they mixed a powerful magic powder with the snuff that no one would know that it was not just snuff, anyone near the D.O would in pretend to take snuff but would in reality be blowing the powerful magic powder in the direction of the D.O. in order to send him away.
