Leatherback sea turtle

Senckenberg Nature Museum Frankfurt
Frankfurt am Main, Germany

The Leatherback Sea Turtle is the largest living turtle; it weighs up to 900 kilograms and its carapace can reach a length of two meters. Unlike most turtles, its carapace does not bear bony plates but is covered by a leathery skin. The turtles are able to dive to a depth of 1,000 meters and feed primarily on jellyfish. Unfortunately, they seem to have a hard time distinguishing their prey from floating plastic waste, which often seals the turtles’ fate.
