Migration Museum

Migration Museum
Adelaide, Australia

This banner is part of the museum's Community Banners project, 'Memories and Dreams'. It is symbolic of Lebanese immigrants' experiences in South Australia.
The snow-capped mountains, village and fertile valley are typical of the Lebanese landscape. Other images of Lebanon include the cedar tree (arza), the brass mortar and pestle (hewin) and the traditional drum (durbakee), which is the basis of Arabic music. The antiquity of the area is symbolised by the Baalbeck ruins and the culture by figures in traditional dress. The link withAustralia is the boat showing how ‘the Lebanese left their country … hoping to find prosperity and peace’.
