Life of St Catherine of Alexandria, German

On the rear side of the first leaf (fol. 1v), a woodcut has been pasted into the book which depicts the convent’s patron saint, St Catherine, with her attributes, the wheel and sword. The woodcut was printed on parchment and carefully coloured and gilded by hand. Already before the invention of printing with movable type, woodcut images were widely available to illustrate books.
